Russian Authorities Confident That They Can Safely Host Foreign Fans at Their Stadium for the Euro 2020

With the UEFA European Championship of 2020 happening soon, sports authorities have been providing UEFA with guarantees that their stadiums can safely host spectators. In fact, we have already seen how the lack of these guarantees resulted in venue changes.

Dublin and Bilbao have already lost their scheduled matches because of this. The two previous host cities couldn’t guarantee that their stadiums can safely operate at at least 25% capacity. As a result of this, Seville will now host the matches instead of Bilbao.

On the other hand, UEFA transferred Dublin’s matches to London’s Wembley Stadium and St Petersburg’s Gazprom Arena. Both of these host cities had managed to guarantee safe access. Due to these changes, Russia now has the second-highest number of scheduled matches.

With a total of 7 matches, including a quarter-final, the only other host city with more scheduled matches is England. In fact, there will be a total of 8 matches held at Wembley Stadium. However, Russian authorities have gone a step further than simply allowing access to fans.

The sports authorities at St Petersburg have absolute confidence in their ability to provide a safe environment for fans. In fact, the head of the local organising committee, Alexei Sorokin, said: ‘We are sure that we can provide all safety measures, we are not afraid’.

They are so confident in their health and safety measures that they’re willing to allow foreign fans in the stadium.

Foreign Spectators Can Attend Euro Matches at St Petersburg’s Gazprom Without the Need for a Visa

Russian authorities will allow foreign Euro 2020 ticket holders to enter the country without the need for a visa. This is despite the imposed COVID-19 measures that restrict movement into the country and only allowing entry from certain countries.

However, it’s understood that these decisions were taken with the approval of the federal authorities. Despite all of this, attendees will still have to wear masks whilst in the stadium. Moreover, they’ll also need to provide a negative COVID-19 test before being allowed access.

These are obligatory requirements that spectators need to follow if they are to enter the stadium. On this subject, Sorokin was unequivocal: ‘Permission to enter Russia does not cancel the rules and measures that must be followed on Russian territory’.
