With regard to Gaelic hurling events, there are many top competitions that occur throughout the year, but the one that every professional hurling player wants to win is the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.
Due to the popularity of this competition, we offer our Irish GAA hurling betting fans a variety of markets and competitive odds for this event.
In the following guide, we will tell you everything you need to know about the All-Ireland Hurling Championship, which includes the format, best teams, popular markets, and betting tips.
What Is the All-Ireland Hurling Championship (Liam MacCarthy Cup)?
This is the hurling competition that Irish hurling fans look forward to the most, and it has been contested each year, apart from one, since 1887.
The final, which usually takes place at Croke Park, Dublin, in the middle of July, sees tens of thousands of hurling fanatics flock to the capital city to soak in the atmosphere and see who will go on and write their name in the history book by winning the Liam MacCarthy Cup.
There are 17 teams that battle it out to qualify for the All-Ireland Hurling Championship, but only 8 can book themselves a spot in this prestigious tournament.
Teams enter at different stages in the competition, depending on how they have performed in other provincial tournaments. Kilkenny are the most successful team with a total of 36 titles, but Limerick have won four of the previous five editions.
Gaelic Athletic Association
The GAA, which stands for the Gaelic Athletic Association, is an Irish organisation which focuses on trying to promote Irish sports and pastimes, including the likes of Gaelic football, Gaelic handball, hurling, camogie, and rounders. Additionally, they also promote Irish music, dance, and language.

To put it simply, they try to promote everything that is indigenous to the Emerald Isle. It came into being in 1884, and since then it has become extremely influential for the Irish and the diaspora.
Irish Provinces’ Hurling Teams
As mentioned briefly above, there are 17 teams that have a chance of qualifying for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship each year, but only 8 get a shot at glory. We are going to discuss the format a little later on in this guide, but for now we will look at the different teams that you could come across when you betting on All-Ireland hurling.
Leinster Teams
- Carlow
- Dublin
- Kildare
- Kilkenny
- Laois
- Offaly
- Westmeath
- Wexford
Munster Teams
- Clare
- Cork
- Kerry
- Limerick
- Tipperary
- Waterford
Connacht and Ulster Teams
- Galway (Connacht)
- Antrim (Ulster)
- Down (Ulster)
N.B. Since there are just a few hurling teams in these two provinces, they compete in the Joe McDonagh Cup, where they have the chance to play in the following Leinster Senior Hurling Championship. They will swap places with the team that finishes bottom of the Leinster Championship.
All-Ireland Hurling Championship Format & Qualifications
The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship is the pinnacle of competition in this ancient Irish sporting pursuit. The race to win the Liam McCarthy Cup takes in provincial championships and various feeder tournaments before the All-Ireland knockout stages, where the battle intensifies and the All Ireland hurling outright betting is reduced until one county is left standing in Croke Park with the trophy.
Eight teams qualify for the All-Ireland Championship each year, and their starting position in the competition depends on how well they performed in their qualifying tournament. There are preliminary quarter-finals, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final. It is a knockout format, so teams are eliminated after one loss.
It should be clear by now that there are two provincial hurling championships, and the all-important dates can be seen in the table below:
βοΈ Provincial Championship | π Dates |
βοΈ Leinster Football Championship | 19th April β 8th June |
βοΈ Munster Football Championship | 19th April β 7th June |
Leinster Hurling Championship
This is a big hurling competition in its own right, and all participating teams want to get their hands on the coveted Bob O’Keeffe Cup.
However, there is arguably a bigger prize at stake, and that is a spot in the All-Ireland Hurling Championship, where they get a chance to fight it out for the Liam MacCarthy Cup.

Six teams will play each other once in the Leinster Championship, with the two teams finishing in first and second qualifying for the final – the winners advance to the semis of the All-Ireland Championship, while the runners-up go into the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
The team that comes third in the group will also advance to the preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Championship.
Munster Hurling Championship
This is another big hurling competition, and the participating teams are all eager to win the Mick Mackey Cup.
Like with the Leinster Hurling Championship, the teams, of which there are five, will play each other once, with the top two meeting in the final – the winners book a spot in the All-Ireland semis, while the runners-up enter the quarter-final stage.
The third-place team will enter the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-finals.
Joe McDonagh Cup
Six teams play each other once in the Joe McDonagh Cup, which takes place at around the same time as the provincial championships.
The top two teams battle it out for the trophy and also book themselves a spot in the preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Hurling Championship.

The winners, if they are from Leinster, Ulster, or Connacht will play in the following yearβs Leinster Hurling Championship, while if the winner is a team from Munster, they are promoted to the following Munster Hurling Championship.
The winners take the spot of the team who finishes bottom of the provincial championship with six teams.
All-Ireland Hurling Stages
Following the completion of the Leinster and Munster Senior Hurling Championships, as well as the Joe McDonagh Cup, the knockout phase of the All-Ireland Championship begins.
The preliminary quarter-finals are first, reducing the field down to eight, before the quarter-finals. The semi-finals and final are played in Croke Park in Dublin, the GAA’s Headquarters with a capacity in excess of 82,000. The key dates for the knockout stages are below, as the All Ireland hurling betting truly heats up in high summer.
βοΈ Final Stage | π Dates |
βοΈ Preliminary quarter-finals | 14th/15th June |
βοΈ Quarter-finals | 21st/22nd June |
βοΈ Semi-finals | 5th/6th July |
βοΈ Final | Sunday 20th July |

All-Ireland Hurling Betting Odds
When it comes to hurler of the year odds or any other odds at Betiton Ireland, the three formats that are available are decimal, fractional, and American. The default is decimal, but you can change it to whatever one you prefer at the top of the page.
- Decimal: The number tells you the total payout that you will get and not the overall profit.
- Fractional: The number indicates that amount that can be won for every β¬1 that is bet.
- American: The + indicates the underdogs and tells you the amount that can potentially be won from a $100 stake, while the – indicates the favourites and tells you how much you need to stake to potentially win $100.
All-Ireland Hurling Betting Markets
When you are All-Ireland betting hurling, you will see that there are a number of different markets that Irish bettors can opt to put their money on. In this section of our guide, we are going to take a look at five of the most popular:
Match Winner:
This is the easiest kind of bet because you are simply betting on the team that will go on and win the match. Keep in mind that a hurling match can potentially end in a draw.
Outright Winner:
If you do not want to predict the winner of a match, then you can try to predict the winner of the whole competitions. The earlier you place your bets, the higher the All-Ireland final odds will be.

Accumulator Betting:
If you want to put down some match winner bets but do not like the odds that are on offer, then you can think about putting them all into one big bet – called an accumulator. You will need all of your predictions to be correct in order to win.
Total Points Scored:
Your bookie will give you a number, and then you have to decide whether the final number of points that are scored will be Over or Under that number.
Winning Margin:
For this bet type, you need to pick a range of points that you think the winning team will win by. The odds will depend on the points range that you opt for, with higher margins giving up higher odds.

All-Ireland Hurling Betting Tips by Betiton
Doing some random betting for All-Ireland hurling might work once in a blue moon, but more often than not you will just end up with losing bets. Below are some tips to keep in mind when you are betting on this tournament.

- Make use of handicap betting: If a match sees a complete gulf in class between two teams, then you can level the playing field by giving one team a points advantage and the other team a points disadvantage. If done correctly, you can increase your chances of landing a winning bet.
- Check the weather: Before you bet on any hurling match, it is important to check out the weather. If it is wet, which is a high possibility since it is Ireland, then mistakes can creep in and impact the flow of the game. If the turf is very wet, then it will be hard for players to stay on their feet.
- Never ignore form: No matter what sporting event it is that you are betting on, it is important that you always take the time to check out the current form of the team you want to bet on. If they are on a losing streak or have a poor head-to-head record against their opponents, bet on something else.
