When it comes to Gaelic sporting events, there are plenty of big competitions that take place throughout the year, but the cream of the crop is the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. This is the trophy that every Gaelic footballer wants to get their hands on at least once in their career.
Due to its popularity, we offer our Irish GAA football betting fans competitive odds and a range of markets for this tournament. In the guide below, you will find out all that you need to know about the All-Ireland Senior Championship, ranging from the format to the potential participating teams to betting tips to markets.
What Is the All-Ireland Football Championship (Sam Maguire Cup)?
This is the competition that all Gaelic football fans across Ireland look forward to each year, and it has been taking place almost every year since 1889.
The final is played at Croke Park in Dublin on the 35th Sunday of the year, and tens of thousands flock to the capital to experience the atmosphere and drama. The winning team is presented with the Sam Maguire Cup, and the winning players go down in Gaelic football folklore.
The team that has had most success in this tournament is Kerry as they have won the title no fewer than 38 times. This is seven more times than Dublin, who are the second most successful team in the history of the tournament. All Gaelic football teams have the chance to qualify for this big competition, but only 16 qualify in the end.
Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association, also called GAA, is an Irish-based organisation that focuses on promoting Irish Gaelic games and pastimes, which include Gaelic football, hurling, camogie, rounders, and Gaelic handball.
They also promote Irish dance, music, and language. In other words, they promote anything that is indigenous to Ireland.
Since it was founded in 1884, it has gone on to become a huge influence in Irish sports and culture for communities across Ireland and among Irish diaspora.
There is also the Britain GAA, which happens to be the only provincial council of the GAA outside of the Emerald Isle. It is responsible for Gaelic games across the United Kingdom.

All-Ireland Football Championship Format & Qualifications
When you are GAA All-Ireland football betting, or betting on any other type of competition, you need to understand the format since this could end up having a big impact on whatever outcome it is that you have decided to place bets on. So, with this firmly in mind, we are now going to explain the format of the All-Ireland Football Championship.
The provinces, which are Munster, Connacht, Leinster, and Ulster, each have their own provincial championship that has a knock-out format. Out of the 33 teams that take place, 16 will make it through to the Round-Robin stage of the All-Ireland Football Championship as follows:
- Four winners from each province
- Four runners-up from each province
- The Tailteann Cup winners
- The 7 top-ranked teams in the National Football League
The 16 teams that qualify will be drawn into four groups of four, with each team playing each other once. There are two points on offer for a win and one for a draw. Each team gets to play one match at home, one match away, and one at a neutral venue.
At the end of the Round Robin stage, the top three teams in each group will qualify for the knockout stages – the winners will get a bye into the quarter-finals, while the second and third place teams will enter the preliminary quarter-finals.
Provincial Football Championships
As you should already know by now, there are four provincial football championships, and you can find the all-important dates in the table below.
☘️ Provincial Championship | 📅 Dates |
✔️ Connacht Football Championship | 6th April – 5th May |
✔️ Leinster Football Championship | 7th April – 12th May |
✔️ Munster Football Championship | 7th April – 5th May |
✔️ Ulster Football Championship | 7th April – 12th May |
Connacht Football Championship
The Connacht Football Championship came into being in 1888, and it is the biggest Gaelic football competition in the province. Five teams from Connacht and one team from London and New York compete in this event. It has been dominated by Mayo and Galway as these two teams have claimed no fewer than 97 titles. Over the previous 10 years, Mayo have won four trophies each, while Roscommon have picked up two wins.
The competition has a knockout format, where six of the participating teams are drawn at random into the quarters, while the winners from the previous year get a spot straight in the semi-finals. The two teams that make the final bag themselves a place in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
Leinster Football Championship
The biggest Gaelic football competition that is played in Leinster, and it has been taking place every year since 1888.
There are a total of 11 teams which compete, and the most successful one is Dublin as they have picked up a total of 62 titles.
Meath sit in second place with 21 trophies, which just highlights how dominant Dublin have been – they have won the previous 13 editions in a row.
This is also a straight knockout tournament, and a seeded draw is done to see who plays who.
The semi-finalists from the last edition get a buy into the last eight, while six of the seven other teams are drawn into three first round matches. The lucky 7th team will receive a bye into the quarter-finals. The two finalists qualify for the All-Ireland Championship.
Munster Football Championship
The biggest Gaelic football competition in the province of Munster, and it has been taking place annually since 1888. Kerry have been the dominant team over the years, winning no fewer than 84 titles – this is 47 more trophies than second-place Cork. Since 2010, Kerry have won this competition 12 times and are the current reigning champions.
This is knockout football which sees four of the six teams being drawn at random into the quarter-finals, while the remaining two teams, usually the two finalists from the previous year, are sent straight through to the semi-finals. The winners and the runners-up enter the Round Robin stage of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
Ulster Football Championship
This is the biggest Gaelic Football event in Ulster, with the first tournament having been played way back in 1888. Out of the three other provincial competitions, this is considered to be one of the trickiest to win. There are nine teams in total, and Cavan have been the most successful team with a total of 40 titles. Derry won in 2022 and 2023, picking up their 8th and 9th titles.
Like the tournaments above, this tournament has a knockout format, and seven teams will get drawn into the quarters, while the remaining two teams have to play in a preliminary match. The two teams that get to the final will book themselves a spot in the All-Ireland Championship.
All-Ireland Football Group Stage (Round Robin)
When all 16 teams that will be taking part in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is known, a draw will be done which will divide the team into four groups of four.
Each team plays each other once, with two points being given for a win and one for a draw.
Each team plays one match at home, one match away from home, and one match at a neutral stadium.
All-Ireland Football Stage
Once all matches have been played in the Round Robin stage, the top three teams from each of the groups will make it through to the knockout stages of the tournament.
The winners will receive a bye into the Quarter-Finals, while those teams that finish in second and third will enter the Preliminary Quarter-Finals.

All-Ireland Football Betting Odds
When it comes to All-Ireland football betting odds, there are three different formats that you can make use of, and these are fractional, decimal, and American. Here at Betiton Ireland, we have all three formats on offer, but the default format is decimal – you can toggle between the different formats in the top right. If you are new to betting All Ireland football, then we recommend that you stick to decimal odds as they are the easiest to get to grips with. We will briefly explain the different odds formats now:
- Decimal odds: The number indicates the total payout you will receive and not your total profit. If you place a €10 bet with odds of 3.00 and it goes on to win, you will receive €30 back – €20 profit and €10 stake.
- Fractional odds: The number tells you the amount that is on offer for every €1 that is staked. For instance, if you place a €10 bet with odds of 5/1 and it is a winning one, you will see a return of €60 – a €50 profit and your €10 stake.
- American odds: Such odds come with a – and + sign, with the former indicating the favourites and the latter indicating the underdogs. The – sign tells you how much you need to bet in order to win $100 for any successful bet, while the + sign tells you how much you can land if you place a $100 stake.

All-Ireland Football Betting Tips by Betiton
In this part of our guide, we are going to provide you with some top tips to keep in mind should you want to place some All-Ireland Football betting tips. Nobody is forcing you to make use of any of these tips, but if you put down some random bets without doing any research, then do not be shocked when you end up losing more often than you win.
- Avoid Handicap Betting: While handicap betting is popular among many sporting events, it is not ideal for competitions such as the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The reason is simple – handicap betting gives you the chance to level the playing field when there is a huge mismatch by giving one team a points advantage or disadvantage. Such contests are few and far between in this competition.
- Manage Your Bankroll: We are going to assume that you do not have a money tree, so it is important that you set up a budget with an amount that you know you can afford to potentially lose. Always remember that winning is something that can never be guaranteed when you are sports betting, no matter how much research you do.
- Check Out the Weather: Before you go ahead and place a bet on any Gaelic football match, we recommend that you check out the weather. If it is very wet, which is a big possibility in Ireland, then the players could struggle with their ball handling, which can lead to mistakes and low-scoring games. Also, it might be hard for the players to keep their footing, which can impact the quality of a game.
