What Is the NHL?

The National Hockey League (NHL) is a 32-team professional ice hockey league in North America. Seven of the teams come from Canada, while twenty-five are from the United States of America. The NHL was founded on November 26, 1917, and had four Canadian teams at its beginning.

The league expanded to the United States in 1924, when the Boston Bruins joined, and has since comprised American and Canadian teams. The NHL is divided into two conferences of 16 teams each: the Eastern Conference, and the Western Conference which are further categorized into two divisions of 8 teams each.

Eastern Conference Teams

The Eastern Conference contains the first four teams with the most Stanley Cups in history – the Montreal Canadiens (24), the Detroit Red Wings (11), the Toronto Maple Leafs (13), and the Boston Bruins (6). Created in 1974, it was originally known as the Prince of Wales Conference but was changed to the Eastern Conference in the 1993/94 season.

The Wales Conference divisions’ names were also altered from Adams and Patrick to Atlantic and Northeast. A third division, the Southeast, was added to the Conference in 1998 to accommodate the league’s expansion.

However, in 2013 the Atlantic Division’s name was retained but it was reassigned to what had been the Northeast Division, while the old Atlantic Division was renamed the Metropolitan Division, and the Southeast Division was dissolved.

Another reorganization in 1998 added a third division, Northwest, to the Western Conference but it was disbanded in 2013 and its American teams – Colorado Avalanche, and Minnesota Wild – joined the Central Division, while its Canadian teams – Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers – moved back to the Pacific Division.

How Does NHL Sports Betting Work?

Ice hockey betting works the same way as most team sports. The bookmaker provides the odds for listed matchups and events. You can place a bet on a team you believe will win a game, reach the playoffs, win the Stanley Cup final, or a player winning a specific award, and so on.

Apart from that, you can also bet on the exact score, the number of goals a game will produce, and the number of points a team will get in a regular season. If your prediction succeeds, your bet wins. However, if your prediction does not happen, then you lose that wager amount.

Betiton Canada NHL Betting Odds

Betiton Canada’s NHL betting lines represent the likelihood of a specific outcome occurring. The odds can be showcased in three formats: Decimal, American, and Fractional. NHL betting online odds are calculated by considering relevant statistical data and other important factors to guess the probability of an outcome happening.

Bookmakers do this by evaluating data from past performances and current information such as the current form of the teams to describe one team as a favorite and the other as an underdog. Hence, your potential payout depends on your wager and the assigned odds.

NHL Bet Types

  • NHL money line betting: This is a straight bet that you place on which team will win a game. Your chosen team must win the game for your bet to be successful. Potential payouts are calculated by multiplying the odds offered and the amount of money wagered. The favorites are typically assigned smaller odds, whilst the underdogs get larger odds.
  • NHL spread betting: This type of bet is also known as the puck line. The NHL spread is a margin of points by which you’re betting a team will win and it depends more on the score than which team wins or loses the game.
  • NFL betting futures: These bets are long-term wagers that you can place on the results of a future event such as the team you think will make the conference playoffs, win a conference final, or lift the Stanley Cup.
  • NHL total betting: In NHL sports betting, this form of bet is whereby you place a wager that the combined total of goals both teams score in a hockey game will be over or under a given number. It is also referred to as over/under betting.
  • NHL player props: A player props bet means that you’re wagering on an individual player’s performance and/or statistics. For example, you can bet on a player to score a particular team’s first goal in an online NHL betting game.

With the NHL betting lines explained, the next section will focus on how to up the ante when it comes to in-play wagers.

Betiton Canada NHL Betting Tips

As the best NHL betting site in Canada, we provide hockey betting tips that can help you make more informed decisions. Check out our golden NHL betting tips to consider that can help boost your NHL online betting.

  1. Consider the starting goalies. Knowing the starting goalies for a game is a vital tip. Usually, a team’s main goalie will play most games, but backup goalies are sometimes given the chance to play, which can potentially have a significant impact on the outcome of the game.
  2. Keep up to date with the injury news of the teams. Knowing who may miss a game is an important factor to consider before placing your bets.
  3. Don’t forget to analyze the NHL public betting trend before placing your wagers and don’t always follow the masses.
  4. Make sure to keep track of head-to-head stats between teams, any winning or losing streaks, and how teams perform across both home games and away matches.
  5. Avoid betting on your favorite team all the time. When you think the opponent has a greater chance of winning the game, you can lay your wager on them.
