Hurling is an Irish outdoor team sport which makes up one of Ireland’s native Gaelic Games. It is one of the oldest and fastest field sports in the world, and like other Gaelic games is entirely amateur in its coordination. Hurling has had a long, traditional and historical relationship with Canada, with some sources showing that games of hurling were played in St John’s, Newfoundland as far back as the 1700’s.
A list of some of the basic rules of this historic game can be found further down this guide, and the best hurling betting odds, here at Betiton – the best online sports betting site in Canada.

Hurling Betting Markets
When it comes to hurling betting markets, the Betiton CA sportsbook offers you the best hurling odds.
Below, we will look at ten of the most popular hurling bets.
- Match Winner: This is the simplest and most popular bet, as all you are doing with this bet is betting on who you think will win the match.
- Outright Competition Winner: In this bet, you are betting on who you think will win a competition outright.
- Total Points: With this bet, you are given a number, and you simply bet on whether you think the total points scored in a match will be over or under that number.
- Draw No Bet: This bet offers an extra bit of insurance to your stake as it takes the tie out of the equation. The odds are not as good as a match winner bet, but if the match ends level your stake will be returned.
- First Goal scorer: With this hurling bet type, you are selecting which player you think will score the first goal of the match.
- Handicap Betting: Handicap betting gives a point deficit to the favourites or points boost to the underdog and you bet against these revised numbers.
- First Scoring Play: This is like the first goal scorer market but gives you the option of winning from a team scoring a point instead of a goal.
- Player of the Match: You will win on this bet if your selection matches that of the television pundits’ choice of player of the match.
- Half Time Result: In this bet type you are simply picking who you think will be winning the match at half time.
- Last Scorer: You choose which of the two teams you think will get the last score of the game. It can be either a point or a goal.

Main Hurling Rules Explained by Betiton
To fully understand the hurling betting market, it is essential you know the basic rules of the sport.
- In hurling, each team has fifteen players. A goalkeeper, six defenders, two midfielders, three half forwards and three full forwards. A top-level hurling squad is generally made up of twenty–four–thirty players, and five substitutions are allowed per game.
- A match lasts at least seventy minutes, thirty-five per half, but generally goes on longer with added time at the end of each half.
- The aim of the game is that players use their hurley to strike the ball (a sliotar) either over the opponent’s crossbar for one point or past the opposition goalkeeper into the nets for a goal worth three points.
- The ball cannot be picked directly off the ground. It must be flicked up using the player’s hurley.
- A player can run with the ball for four steps, after which they must either balance the ball on their hurley (a solo) or pass or strike the ball.
- A player cannot grab hold of an opponent’s hurley with their hands, but a shoulder-on-shoulder challenge is allowed.
- The match is started by the referee throwing the ball in between four designated players (usually the four midfielders) on the halfway line. This is repeated to begin the second half.
- Officials for a game of hurling include a referee, two linesmen, a fourth official and four umpires.
